Owning a pool can be like having a relaxing oasis in your backyard. When the summer heat comes, that pool is a lifesaver where you can cool off and relax in the comfort of your own home. One of the most important components of your swimming pool system is the pool pump. It’s always working on your behalf to circulate water so the water doesn’t stagnate or go untreated. And while we appreciate all that work, you know what ruins that backyard oasis? That dang pool pump motor that’s grinding away at the inside of your skull. The noise their pool pump emits can be extremely loud, potentially annoying the whole neighborhood!

If your pool pump is making noise that sounds unusual and loud, you should contact a technician as you likely have some type of faulty bearings, blocked lines or issues with the motor and assembly of your pool pump motor.

Determining The Type of Noise You Are Dealing With

It is imperative to determine the type of noise your pool pump is making before you take action to soundproof it. The two types of sound you will be dealing with a pool pump are:

    • Structural: Structural noise occurs when parts of the pool pump are rattling or shaking while the pump is running. To deaden structural noise, you will likely need to use a decoupling product such as rubber isolation mounts to isolate two hard surfaces that are smacking into each other.
    • Airborne: Airborne noise is most likely the reason you want to soundproof your pool pump. Examples of airborne noise are water moving, fans operating, or other standard operational noises that the pump and its motor will make.

It is normal for pool pumps to make some noise as they are machines with a motor and moving parts. If you notice a change in your pool pump and it starts making much more noise than normal, you likely have a broken pump. We are soundproofing experts here at Second Skin, not pool pump technicians, so if you suspect your pool pump is broken, we recommend calling a pool maintenance professional.

If your pool pump is functioning perfectly, but you want to quiet it down a bit, read on.

Pool Pump Noise Reduction

The key to soundproofing a pool pump is to build a barrier between you and the noise source and build that barrier in the right way so that it has dense soundproofing materials that are made for stopping sound transfer. If that fails or your pimp is just crazy loud than you may want to call a pool pump technician because there’s only so much soundproofing can do. In summary, here’s the keys to pool pump noise reduction:

  1. Build an enclosure around your pool pump
  2. Make sure your pool pump is on level ground and is on vibration pad or mount
  3. Call a pool pump technician

As we mentioned, the most foolproof way to hush your pool pump and prevent the noise from disturbing you or your neighbors is to create a dense barrier around your machine on all exposed sides. This dense barrier is typically a fence or a full enclosure (like a box). Depending on your situation, we will either be building this barrier, or adding to an existing barrier to make it more effective. Not all enclosures are created equal, and unless you use proper soundproofing techniques, you will get subpar soundproofing results.

If you are already have a barrier around your pool pump, you likely have one of the following:

    • a full enclosure surrounding your pump on all sides
    • a fence either completely or partially surrounding your pump

Let’s walk you through the each of the most likely scenarios and how to soundproof a pool pump.

Soundproofing a Pool Pump Enclosure

The keys to a pool pump noise reduction box are:

  1. Adding sound absorption inside the box
  2. Making sure the box is well sealed
  3. Making the walls of the box dense enough to block sound

If you have built an enclosure around your pool pump, then you are on the right track. The enclosure should be built of a dense material (1/2” plywood works well), and surround the sides and top of the pool pump with no air gaps. But even if you already have this type of enclosure, there are still a few areas to improve on to make your enclosure more soundproof.

1. Add Sound Absorption

Adding sound absorption on the interior side of the airtight soundproof box reduces the reflectiveness of the surfaces inside the box and ultimately reduces the amount of noise that you will hear outside of the enclosure. If your barrier is made of plywood, the best option is to add our BlocknZorbe sound panels (charcoal) inside the box with 100% coverage. They are waterproof, sound absorptive, and UV stable so they last forever outside. Just screw them into a box or attach them with a strong outdoor adhesive.

2. Seal Around the Perimeter of the Box

If there are gaps in the box, you must seal them. Use acoustical sealant to close up any gaps or seams where airborne noise can escape. Even a small gap in the barrier can allow a lot of noise to escape. Large openings will need to be sealed with wood or mlv sound barrier. If any openings are for ventilation, you’ll need to leave those uncovered or the pump can overheat. To preserve ventilation, build a baffle “silencer” for those vent openings using that same BlocknZorbe material.

3. Add Density to the Enclosure

Even if you have covered the pool pump on all 5 sides, your enclosure will not be very effective at blocking sound if it is made of thin materials. To add density to a box like a pool pump, we either use Luxury Liner MLV sheets or… BlocknZorbe again!

Our Recommendation

BlocknZorbe Panels is your best friend for improving a pool pump enclosure. BlocknZorbe panels are great for outdoor soundproofing projects because they are durable, waterproof, and easy to clean. The charcoal version of these panels are UV stable, meaning they will hold up in the sunlight and can be permanently used outside without decaying.

As the name would suggest, they are designed to block and absorb sound, making them a superior building material for soundproofing. Then use our acoustical sealant to seal any or seams, and you are good to head back to the pool!

Soundproofing a Fence around Your Pool Pump

Another thing pool owners will do to reduce the noise coming from their pool pump is to build a soundproof fence around the pump. Although this won’t yield the same results as a full enclosure, if done correctly, it can effectively reduce noise.

The most important thing to look out for when building any type of soundproofing structure is breaking the line of sight between you and the noise source. If there is a clear line of view between you and your pool pump, you will hear it.

Here are four other key principles to keep in mind when soundproofing a fence around your pool pump.

Fence Height

As long as the fence is at least as tall as your pool pump and breaks the line of sight, you will see a 5 dB noise reduction. But for the best results, we recommend building the fence at least double the height of your pump.

Fence Placement

The best place for your fence for your pool pump is near the source of the sound. This will prevent sound from flanking over the top of the fence and disturbing you or your neighbors.

Fence Density

Just like with a standard enclosure, the density of the fence matters. If you want to block as much sound as possible, we recommend using our charcoal BlocknZorbe panels in conjunction with a wood fence. These panels will improve the STC rating of your fence, which also creating an absorptive face. You can also use a soundproof blanket like our Quiet Quilt Outdoor Acoustic Blankets to cover the face of the wood fence if you get the outdoor rated version.

Fence Construction

It is also important to ensure the gaps in your fence are filled. If you have installed a chain link fence or your fence has lots of open gaps, we recommend hanging our Quiet Quilt Outdoor Soundproof Blankets. They are absorptive, sound blocking, and exterior-rated!

Use BlocknZorbe on Any Pool Pump Quiet Box

One of the best tools for soundproofing a pool pump enclosure is BlocknZorbe, because it both blocks and absorbs sound. Give us a call to discuss your pool pump project if you want to discuss how BlocknZorbe may help.

  • One of the few acoustical materials with both an STC and NRC rating
  • Lightweight and easy to clean
  • Water resistant, impact resistance, and tackable
  • Use Charcoal for any outdoor use

Building a Fence or Enclosure for a Noisy Pool Pump

If your pool pump is sitting like a lone wolf without anything around it, you are going to fully experience the loud noises it makes. The only way to block this noise is to build a soundproof fence or enclosure using the soundproofing materials and techniques we have gone over. This is a similar [rocess to building a fence for soundproofing a pickleball court, just on a smaller scale

Whether you need to block airborne noise, stop vibrations, or absorb sound, we at Second Skin Audio can recommend the best product for you. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions, and one of our soundproofing experts will be happy to help!
