What Is Wood Wool?

The wood fibers, or wood wool, in our acoustic panels originated as giant logs that are run through a machine to shred them to look like spaghetti. The paper-thin shavings are often used as packaging or to create other products, such as acoustic wood wool panels.

The wood wool is then combined with Portland cement and water to give the product strength and structure to remain sturdy in any setting. Once the three components are mixed, they are pressed into large wood fiber blocks. These blocks are then cut down to panel sizes or custom shapes and primed for painting. The final coat of paint can be applied in our warehouse or on the job site.

Why Do People Choose Wood Wool?

There are several reasons why people choose wood wool, with the biggest reason being its versatility. You can cut and paint wood wool panels to match any room aesthetic, make unique custom designs, and work with the material using all the same tools as regular wood. We can even engrave the panels with any design that you can code into a CNC machine.

Timberwool acoustic wood panels are often used in new building constructions by attaching directly to a wall or ceiling assembly or laying the panels into a ceiling grid. It's a great alternative to fiberglass or foam products because it is long-lasting and eco-friendly. They are also used to control sound in schools, lecture halls, gymnasiums, auditoriums, bars, restaurant noises, and manufacturing facilities, among other venues.

These sound absorbing wood panels have a high NRC rating due to the woven texture at their core, reducing room echo and reverberation to improve the sound quality in an environment. Combining wood fiber acoustic panels with a CelluZorbe backer, will increase the amount of sound absorbed as well as help thermally insulate a space.

Our Timberwool Panels have two NRC ratings when mounted directly to the wall. The 1" wood wool panel has an NRC rating of 0.45 while the 2" has a rating of 0.75. Higher NRCs can be achieved by installing Timberwool on furring strips with an air gap or CelluZorbe backer.

How to Work With and Install Wood Wool

Our wood panels can be treated just like any other wood product. It is common for them to be cut and painted for design purposes. Timberwool comes treated and sealed with a clear coat, giving you the freedom to paint it to match any room design.

Paint it with latex paint using an HVLP gun or airless sprayer. Apply two thin coats or use a latex primer for a uniform finish. For large installations, we recommend painting after installing them on the wall/ceiling to give it a finished look.

Since the wood fiber acoustic panels are heavy, we recommend you mechanically fasten them to the wall or use furring strips with screws to create an even surface. You can also CelluZorbe insulation behind the panels and between the mounting strips to increase thermal insulation and sound absorbed.

Attaching the Timberwool Wood Wool Panels to a wall is a simple process. We’ve included a rough outline below, or you can check out our full install guide.

  1. Prepare the wall by installing ¾" deep and 4" tall mounting strips. If using the CelluZorbe acoustical backer, use 1" furring strips instead. For the standard size panel (nominal 2’ x 8’), there should be 23-3/4” vertical centers. Make sure to take measurements to see how much of the wooden panels you need to cut.

  2. Draw level lines on the mounting strips for reference on where you want to attach the panels either vertically or horizontally.

  3. Cut the wood wool panel and position it carefully at the bottom corner. Make sure it is flush against the mounting strips and slowly drive a screw into the top corner on one side with a minimum of ¾" edge spacing.

  4. Continue slowly driving screws at recommended spacings all along the perimeter. There should be a maximum of 24" of space between screws. For high traffic areas or ceilings, there should be at most 12" of space. Make sure to back out the screw if you need to set the panel flush against the mount or adjust it.

  5. After you finish attaching the first panel, check again to ensure it’s level. This first panel will set the alignment for all the other panels.

  6. The panels are often installed staggered on top of each other. Cut the second panel according to your measurements, then attach it to the mount starting with the top corner and slowly driving the screws around it. The panel should be flush with any side walls and both mounting strips. Continue to check that your panels are level.

  7. Continue to measure, cut, and place panels until you're finished. To see if a wall is out of plumb, measure the top and bottom panel dimensions before cutting.

  8. If the panels have not been painted, now’s the time! You can use a latex primer, but it’s not required. Spray on the paint with an HVLP gun, airless spray equipment, or an air assisted sprayer.
